    Peanut Wood Box
    Stone Source: Australia
    Artist: Konstantin Libman

The material used to make this decorative box has a story to tell. The lid is made out of "peanut wood," which gets its name due to its resemblance to peanuts in toffee. The wood hails from Australia and, as it died was swept into the ocean and then attacked by Teredoes, or Shipworms. These fish bored holes and tunnels into the wood. The wood then sunk and was buried where the holes were replaced by light colored sediment creating the pattern seen here. This material is popular for lapidary objects such as this lovely box made by artist Konstantin Libman. The lid features four cut and polished inlaid sections, and the box itself is made of a variety of black Basalt known as Diabase (Dolerite). Diabase contains bits of glass known as Tachylite, which gives the stone an iridescent appearance. The inside is lined with Spanish Cedar and is finished with gold-plated brass hinges. The box comes with a protective outer wooden box.
