Description

Koroit Boulder Opal Box
Stone Source: Australia
Artist: Konstantin Libman

Koroit Boulder Opal from Queensland, Australia, is among the most distinctive varieties of precious Opal, prized for the vivid play-of-color that forms within its natural Ironstone host rock. Unlike solid Opal nodules, Boulder Opal occurs as thin seams and veins within Ironstone, creating dramatic patterns where flashes of color contrast against the earthy brown matrix. Each piece is naturally unique, often displaying intricate ribbons and swirling bands of Opal throughout the stone. This elegant keepsake box, crafted by renowned lapidary Konstantin Libman, features Koroit Boulder Opal across all primary exterior surfaces with vivid veins of precious Opal displaying strong play-of-color. The lid is butterfly-matched, highlighting the stone's natural patterns in a symmetrical display. The richly brown and red colored matrix reveals attractive earthy tones interspersed with flashes of blue, yellow, and purple Opal in intricate "scale" and "lava" patterning typical of Koroit material. The interior chamber is lined with Spanish cedar, and the lid is fitted with Gold-plated Brass hinges. Finished with protective felt feet on the base, which also bear the artist's mark "0818." The beautiful box is accompanied by a protective outer wooden box and is in excellent condition, combining remarkable natural materials with fine craftsmanship to make it both a functional object and a striking decorative work of lapidary art.
