Description

Backgammon Set with Board and Pieces
Stone Source: Tiger's Eye; Northern Cape Province, South Africa
Dinosaur Bone; Jurassic, Morrison Formation, Utah, USA
    Artist: Konstantin Libman

One of the oldest board games known, Backgammon has been a mainstay in European history for approximately 5,000 years. This game set was created by well-known Russian artist Konstantin Libman. The set contains a stunning board and 32 handcrafted checker pieces. The exterior on this remarkable game board is made from South African Tiger's Eye. The rich Tiger's Eye has been inlaid masterfully to create a chatoyant "candle flame" effect on the lid. Warm honey brown Goethite, Hematite of both black and rusty orange and dark blue Riebeckite invite in players. The interior is made of colorful Opalite from Australia with earthy reds, browns and yellows creating a calming backdrop for this highly strategic game. The triangular "points" are made of artic white Kacholong (white Opal) from Africa and jet black Nephrite from Australia. Players use checkers fashioned out of rich chatoyant gold Tiger's Eye and "gem" Dinosaur bone. The high quality Dinosaur bone is from Utah and has the coveted trabecular structure. Seen on these counters is the ancient cellular structure of the bone which has now been filled in with minerals of plum purple, dark brown, and white colors, as well as pockets of Quartz crystals. The checkers lay in rich chocolate brown Beechwood holders. The board is finished off with black Diabase (Dolerite) with shimmering specks of Tachylite from Russia. Artist serial number "0530" is present along with gold plated brass hinges. The game may be 5,000 years old, but the material used to make it dates back millions of years. Both the game board and checkers come with their own velvet lined wooden presentation boxes, but you will have to provide your own pair of dice.
