Roads are as emblematic of Texas as the bluebonnet, the blooming prickly pear, the century plant, or the Longhorn steer. After all, Texas exists because of a road, the Camino Real, which ran from Mexico through San Antonio into Louisiana. Texas was the terminus of the road, literally the end of the road in the Spanish Colonial Empire.
The true genius of Julian Onderdonk is that he takes what is emblematic of Texas and makes it monumental and beautiful. With his bluebonnet paintings, the dry dirty land springs forth with a blue carpet of color, or he takes the scourge of a plant, the prickly pear cactus, and renders the blooms so beautifully we are reminded there is a God.
In this painting, the rutted caliche road is as emblematic of Texas as bluebonnets or blooming prickly pear cactus. As the road winds through the hills, alternating areas of shadow and bright Texas light mark the land. The clouds and atmospheric effects of moisture are exceptionally rendered. The haze in the distant hills provide a richness of color and a sense of depth.
The painting is in its original frame and is in a remarkable state of preservation without losses, inpainting, or lining of the canvas.
