    JULIAN ONDERDONK (1882-1922)
    A Path Through The Texas Hill Country
    Oil on canvas
    12in. x 16in.
    Signed lower right

    Another marvelously crafted scene of a winding Hill Country road. This painting, totally keyed to the color blue, has a looseness and spontaneity of being entirely painted plein air.

    As with all great impressoinist paintings, its character changes when viewed from a close distance, a medium distance, or a far distance. The brushstrokes are masterful, not guided by planning, but by instinct. Onderdonk has captured the fleeting effects of light with alternating areas of shadow and light, creating a sense of depth. As pointed out by Cecilia Steinfeld in the book, Julian Onderdonk, A Texas Tradition, ....."Julian's ability to impart the feeling of space, distance and of atmosphere has yet to be equalled by any other Texas artist."



    Condition Report*: Excellent relined condition. Impasto well preserved. One very minor loss to sky inpainted. Period frame in excellent condition.
