An English-born artist, John Brown came to New York in the 1850s and within a decade became an established and popular member of the New York art community. He was a member of the National Academy and maintained a prosperous studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building. Brown is best known for his paintings of rural and urban genre scenes, particularly those of street boys working as fruit sellers, newsboys, or shoeshines. These motifs, which reflect the urban poverty and number of abandoned children on American streets in the late 19th century, were very popular and Brown sold many such works to a number of patrons.

With its simple, neutral background and full-length, endearing portrayal of the young boy, the present work is a prime representative of Brown's depictions of shoeshine boys. Seated on a box in the center of the composition, with the accoutrements of his trade in the lower left corner, the boy looks to his right with a subtle and sweet smile. His tattered, yet clean clothes and cherubic polished face create a charming picture that appeals to the viewer's sympathy. In terms of its composition and sweet sensibility, this work is similar to Brown's Tuckered Out - The Shoeshine Boy, dated to 1888, in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
