    HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY (American 1873 - 1952)
    Marion Davies
    Pastel on paper
    26 x 19.5in.
Signed (in a very light color) lower right
Marion Davies was one of the biggest musical-comedy and screen stars of the 1910s, 20s and 30s. Among her first big successes on the New York stage was in a musical called Chin Chin, in 1915, and it was in this production that she was discovered by Howard Chandler Christy, who first used her as his model for the painting Morning. Today, unfortunately, Davies is probably best remembered for her enduring affair of the heart with William Randolph Hearst and the erroneous assumption that her life resembled that of the fictional Susan Alexander in Orson Welles' film, Citizen Kane (1940). Nothing could be farther from the truth. Although Hearst indeed backed and promoted her career from 1919 on, she did not need his money and in the late 1930s was famously able, simply by selling some of her jewelry, to write a million-dollar check herself to bail his corporation out of debt. The clever, beautiful and talented Davies was one of the most widely admired and beloved figures in Hollywood until she retired in 1937. At that point, after making some 45 films (nearly 20 of them "talkies"), she retreated to San Simeon, Hearst's castle on the California coast, where she held forth as the most spectacular hostess of her day, and devoted herself to numerous charitable causes. Only after Hearst's death in 1951 was she married for the first time, to former actor Horace Brown.
