DescriptionHOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY (American 1873 - 1952)
Nancy Palmer as a Christy Girl, circa 1917
Watercolor on board
13 x 9-1/2in.
Signed lower left
One of the defining images of Howard Chandler Christy's career in the later 1910s, this watercolor depicts the painter's favorite model at the time, Nancy Palmer, whom he would wed in 1919. Printed examples of three slightly different versions of this particular "Christy Girl" composition are preserved in the extensive Christy Archive at Lafayette College, in Easton, Pennsylvania, donated by their artist's heirs. This same image was used to market a commercial product in 1916, Velvee Rose Bath Salts. On November 16, 1919, the year of Christy's marriage to his model, the image was reproduced again, in color, on the cover of the American Weekly section of The New York Sunday American. We are grateful to Elaine M. Stomber, Assistant College Archivist, Lafayette College, for her assistance in the preparation of this entry.
