A pencil study for this same portrait commission can be found in the Society of Illustrators Museum of American Illustration. That study is reproduced as figure P210 on page 1043 of Norman Rockwell A Definitive Catalogue by Laurie Moffatt.

The subject of this portrait study, Mary Louise Curtis Bok Zimbalist (1877-1970), was the grande dame of Philadelphia music and publishing. She was an only child and heiress to Cyrus H. K. Curtis' magazine empire (Saturday Evening Post, Ladies' Home Journal and others). She spent millions to found and support the famed Curtis Institute of Music and was patron to a host of musicians and writers. Her first husband, Edward Bok, was a Pulitzer-prizewinning autobiographer and editor of the Journal. Her second husband was concert violinist Efrem Zimbalist, whose son by a previous marriage, Efrem Jr., starred in the TV series "The FBI."
