"Every girl dreams of a knight in shining armor. Sometimes she meets one..."

This somber scene sets the stage for Sarah-Elizabeth Rodger's romance story, The Ferry Over. In this tale, Thomas Storm, manager of a Delaware River ferry, now on his deathbed, tries to win from his daughter Prue an important promise concerning her future - to quit spending so much time riding the Ferry and settle down with a husband. Try as she may to honor her father's dying wish, Prue finds herself drawn back to the Ferry again and again, and it's a good thing, for it's on the ferry that she first meets, and later wins, her shining knight, Dick Ballantine.

Caption: "Poor old Tom... trying to force a promise from Prue that would mean the end of everything she held dear."

This work is reproduced as figure S44a on page 596 of Norman Rockwell A Definitive Catalogue by Laurie Moffatt.

Our consignors' involvement with this wonderful Norman Rockwell drawing began in 1979 when they purchased it from Elayne Galleries, St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Elayne Lindberg, proprietor. Our consignors were told by the gallery owners that the finished oil painting, for which this drawing was a preliminary study, was lost in a fire. When this preliminary drawing surfaced, it was brought back to Mr. Rockwell, and he verified its authenticity, and at the same time, signed it with his block letter signature.
