Description

Alberto Vargas (Peruvian/American, 1896-1982)
Beauty with a Rifle, Esquire study, circa 1943
Pencil and watercolor on paper
21 x 27 inches (53.3 x 68.6 cm) (sheet)
Signed lower right

During World War II, Esquire began publishing and distributing a special military edition of the magazine free of charge to servicemen. Vargas produced an image for each issue that appeared on the back cover. Some were planned to military-thematic, sometimes with an insignia of the particular service he dedicated the work to. This appears to be a study for the infantry. It is signed "a. Varga". Varga was the name used on his work for Esquire Magazine which he ceased using some time after leaving Esquire. It is also signed using a "circle G" typical only during the 1940's and early 1950's. It should be noted that anybwork signed "Varga" is extremely rare. Even more rare are studies signed "Varga."
