Description
Human-headed Bird-form Pectoral Representing Shamanic TransformationSinú
A.D. 400 - 1000
Gold, Weight 136 grams
Height 5 1/2 in.(14 cm.) Width 5 1/8 in.(13.1 cm.)
This most unusual bird-form pectoral is rare in representing a human head in place of a bird's. This image fusion represents the actual moment of shamanic transformation. An aureole of spiraling circles surrounds the head, which has a braided head band and a thin circular ornament suspended from his nose. Two spirals at the neck are atop a finely braided band. A double braided band separates profile crested bird heads at the point where the tail begins its outward flaring. The outer two of three large spirals atop the head were cut slightly above their centers and planished smooth at the outer edge. There is a soft age patination, with the overall condition very good.
The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.

David Bernstein, New York
