    Description

    Horace Bristol (American, 1909-1997)
Joad Family Applying for Relief Aid, Visalia, California, 1938
    Gelatin silver print, printed later
    12-3/8 x 9-7/8 inches (31.4 x 25.1 cm) (image)
    14 x 11 inches (sheet)
    Signed in pencil, mount verso.

Initially shot as part of a collaborative project with John Steinbeck, Bristol's series on migrant laborers intimately captures the struggles of the time. While Steinbeck backed out of the project in order to expand his short story into a full-length novel, both artists completed their respective works, even using the same title, The Grapes of Wrath.
