Mystic Fine Art Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona, November 13, 1997, lots 184-5.

Figure painter Henry Bacon was one of the first American artists to be admitted to the rigorously academic École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, he served with the Union Army during the Civil War and was badly wounded, which resulted in a discharge that allowed him to leave for France to train as a painter. At the École he trained with Alexandre Cabanel; he rubbed shoulders with Thomas Eakins in Gerome's atelier; and he studied in 1866 at Ecouen with Edouard Frère with whom he painted the French countryside. From these men, conservative academics, Bacon learned to paint in oils with a highly smooth finish with softly outlined figures and rich colors--effects that characterize these two portrait heads painted in Paris. In 1895, he turned almost exclusively to watercolor for which he earned much acclaim both in the French Salons and at the National Academy of Design. His figures are often romanticized bucolic, peasant types or attractive travelers, often aboard ship. Bacon is often credited with popularizing the idea of the shipboard subject.
