    The sketches on the reverse of this portrait, showing a woman's hands adorning the head of a child with flowers, are preparatory for an illustration reproduced in the March 1898 issue of Ver Sacrum, the office magazine of the Vienna Secessionists who included, among others, Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka, Mose and Hoffmann (see A. Strobl, cat. no. I/368). Strobl notes that the portrait may data as early as 1897.


    Condition Report*: Beige paper with deckled edge.
    Recto: 5-inch crease (horizontal and not sharp) runs across top of head of the girl. Miscellaneous handling creases, most of them in the middle and lower half. Paper is slightly darkened from light exposure (mat mark present) The paper is torn and missing along the left side of the sheet, although the work mats out the tear.
    Verso: No light darkening on this side. At the very bottom of the sheet there is an old ink inscription which reads: H K 3 and there is a paste-down label with the number 26 on it.
    The sheet is hinged to the back window mat with cloth tape.
