    R. Lalique Frosted Glass Côte d'Azur Commemorative Statuette with Inscription, circa 1929
    Marks: R. LALIQUE
    6-1/8 inches (15.5 cm). M. p.396, no. E.

This statuette was created to commemorate the inaugural journey of the Côte d'Azur Pullman Express from Paris Gare de Lyon to Ventimiglia. The train lines were operated by French rail companies Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits and Compagnie des Chemins de Fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée. Modeled after Lalique's notable Vitesse car mascot, statuettes like the present example were presented to passengers of the train as souvenirs of the journey. The present model exhibits a molded inscription to the base reading "WL CÔTE D'AZUR PULLMAN EXPRESS PLM 9 - DECEMBRE 1929." A variant without the molded inscription is also noted in Marcilhac's catalog raisonné. Both versions were supplied by Lalique in limited editions and neither was produced for commercial sale.

    Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000.

Condition Report*: Two small inclusions in figure's hair, with chips and fleabites scattered through rim of foot. Scratches of varying depths to underside, and otherwise free from cracks or structural losses.
