    Description

    Quave (American, b. 1988)
    Neo-Pibo, 2019
Flame-worked Borosilicate Glass with abstract millefiori patterning
    9 x 4 x 3 inches (22.9 x 10.2 x 7.6 cm)

Just as "The New York School" is a pillar term within the Abstract Expressionist movement, heralded by Pollock, so too is "The Seattle School" a staple within functional glass art, championed by Quave. Quave has singlehandedly inspired the latest generation of bong artists by infusing modern art techniques with an attention to high-craft. His signature works are his Klein-bottle sculptures. This example is the latest example, and the first available directly to the public for the first time in over 5 years. A klein-bottle can be most closely compared to a hollowed mobiüs-strip. It's a tube with no definable end point that instead tapers gradually from its origin point back into itself and out of its original opening. The bottle was a useful step forward in Topology, a field of mathematics concerned with boundless geometry, which when applied to moving fluids can be useful for keeping friction down to a minimum. To blow one out of glass is incredibly challenging, and to use one as the base of your work is unthinkably tough. Quave cements his work within the functional glass art canon by creating the most superior operating works, but that is just where his sculptures begin their stories. Using these kleins as canvas, Quave explores different New York School techniques like action painting and color field work, to more avant-garde concepts like gold and silver fuming patterns (like in the work present). For "Neo-Pibo" Quave draws inspiration from an amalgam of traditional textile patterns that share a common thread. Persian Rugs, Shipibo fabrics, Celtic illuminations, among others.
