    Born in Massachusetts, Gerard Delano was fascinated by art at an early age. Having studied with illustrators Dean Cornwell, Harvey Dunn and N.C. Wyeth at the Grand Central School of Art, Delano established himself as a successful commercial artist and illustrator in New York until 1919. His first trip to the West was to the mountains of Summit County, Colorado in 1919 to work as a ranch hand. In 1920, he built his own studio at Cataract Creek in Summit County, Colorado, and later established a home and studio in Denver. Afternoon in Autumn , Summit County, Colorado is an exquisite rendering of the terrain that drew Delano west. Typical of his strikingly bold palette, the vibrant yellow hues illuminate the fall landscape while the saturated blues create the perfect setting for billowing white clouds above. The organic, fluid lines and soft edges of the composition create a sense of peace and harmony with the land - a characteristic that is certainly distinguishable in Delano's paintings of the American West.

    Condition Report*: Restoration completed in fall 2006. "Treatments includes consolidating the flaking paint using sturgeon glue or acrylic P550. Cleaning the painting overall using diammonium citrate. Applying a coating of acryloid B-72 to protect the paint. Cut a Mylar sheet window into the foam core backing so that the inscription n the back can be read. Frame: clean the frame with a Naptha rinse to reduce stickiness."

    Strip-lined canvas. Frame rubbing, most apparent around the bottom right corner. 4 inch area of scattered craquelure on the center top edge. An .5 inch speck of surface soiling five inches from the bottom right corner. Pigments did not fluoresce under UV exam.
