St John's Island, Red Sea, Egypt
St. Johns Island, a small speck of land off the Red Sea coast of Egypt appears as if it was the victim of massive artillery bombardment continuing for decades. Known since antiquity as a source for Peridot, August's birthstone, this blasted landscape has not suffered from war so much as incessant operations designed to pry this lovely green gem from the dark, volcanic clutches of the island's lava flows. Several millenia of dedicated hammering has resulted in very little Peridot being discovered there anymore. This makes a rough and cut set of this historic material a bit of a rarity. The set consists of a well-formed, double Peridot crystal of medium green color weighing 41.7 cts and a facetted round brilliant gemstone, cut from the same material, weighing 3.33 cts. The Peridot "rough" measures 23.78 x 22.78 x 11.8 mm while the cut stone is 9 mm in diameter. The back side of the crystal shows a break and there are some brownish inclusions in fractures. Luster is typical, with fine striations being visible on exposed faces. The gemstone is quite clean with a minuscule carbon spot. The crystal is Ex Gerald Herfurth Collection #2702 and previously was part of the E.M. Gunnell collection # 4-18-53. The cut stone is Ex Herb Obodda.

    Estimate: $5,000 - $6,000.
