DescriptionVery Rare Gemstone: Sanidine - 284.88 Ct.
Bebono, Mahasoa East Commune
Betroka District, Anosy Region
Sometimes, one wonders if the extreme variety of Madagascan gem crystals, are not just divine compensation for an inept and feckless government. Unless you are in a helicopter, there are few places in the country that are easily and reliably accessible. In spite of such difficulties, the lure of instant wealth has drawn thousands of Malagasy citizens to the gem areas scattered liberally about the island. Near the former village of Itrongay is the current village of Benono and a couple of 'klicks' from Benono is the source for the rather sizable (280+ cts.) cushion shaped gem featured here. It was fashioned by master cutter Buzz Gray from material found in 1975. Bearing a Riesling sort of body color, the Sanidine shows high transparency and brilliance due to its expert workmanship.
