Very Rare Gemstone: Dumortierite - 2.07 Ct.
Tunduru, Tunduru District, Ruvuma Region, Tanzania

The words "transparent" and "Dumortierite" are rarely seen in the same sentence. This is because Dumortierite doesn't like to form transparent crystals, but Mother Nature likes to throw a 'ringer' into the mix now and then. Along with the usual assortment of Sapphires, Spinels, Rubies, etc., found in the river gravels of the Tunduru region, there are a few things that provoked considerable head scratching and curiosity: transparent crystal fragments of what turned out to be Sapphirine and Dumortierite were recovered from those gravels in 2009. The 2+ carat violet-blue gem offered here, used to be one of those tumbled crystal fragments, before being faceted into the oval, mixed cut gem of today. The expert eyes of the American Gemological Laboratories examined this puzzling gem and pronounced it genuine Dumortierite and attested to same in AGL Cert # CS 65965. Slightly included, and rarer than the proverbial hen's teeth, it is a genuine testament to Mother Nature's sense of humor.
