Very Rare Gemstone: Apatite - 61.60 Ct.
Near Ankarafa Village, Vohemar-Ambilobe District, Northern Madagascar, Madagascar

As a stand-in for Paraiba Tourmaline, one could do worse than the neon blue Apatite discovered not that long ago in Madagascar. Its attractive color is the result of low-level heat treatment of dark blue material. Although softer than most gem materials, it still has wide appeal in earrings, pendants, brooches and the like. Large cut stones are not seen very often; anything over 5 carats is considered good, so a 60+ carat stone is quite extraordinary. That it is an unusual stone can be deduced strictly by knowing that the cutter - Buzz Gray, is commissioned only for rare and high intrinsic value goods. The rough was acquired in 2004 by Warren Taylor, who arranged for its cutting by Gray.
