Very Fine Gemstone: Tsavorite Garnet - 8.08 Ct.
Scorpion Mine, Tsavo National Park, Voi, Taita Taveta District, Coast Province, Kenya

After Tanzania nationalized the gem mines of that country, resident Scottish geologist, and gem miner, Campbell Bridges, noticed the presence of similar host rock for Tsavorite in Kenya, where the government still honored the principle of individual ownership of mining claims. An aerial survey led to the discovery of several outcrops bearing the green gem Campbell had seen in Tanzania some time before. The most productive of these outcrops was ultimately named the Scorpion Mine in honor of the numerous little beasties infesting the neighborhood. In 1983 a crystal fragment was found in that mine that was later fashioned into this fine gemstone. The rough first journeyed to Johannesburg in South Africa, where it was then shaped and polished into a mixed cut cushion weighing a little over 8 carats. It comes with AGL Certification # CS 65942, attesting to its East African origin and freedom from treatment.
