Description
INDICOLITE
Very Fine Gemstone: Tourmaline var. Indicolite - 35.38 Ct.Neu Schwaben, Karibib District, Erongo Region, Namibia
Of the many colors that Tourmaline displays, one of the most desirable of hues happens to be a rich turquoise blue with just a touch of green. The term Indicolite is traditionally applied to material of a predominantly blue hue, whether pure blue, or with a touch of violet or green. One of the premier localities for this rare color variety is on the Farm Neu Schwaben 73, in Namibia. Production from this locality has been erratic due to problems with poachers, mining right squabbles, and the normal African chaos associated with any gemstone operation. This has kept the supply of this lovely material low. Which is lamentable, in view of the fact that Neu Schwaben Tourmaline has some of the most aesthetic and desirable colors ... from anywhere. This rectangular shaped, modified brilliant cut emphasizes the deep greenish blue, so characteristic of this mine. The rough was found almost fifty years ago, in 1966, and since Namibia has a strong association with Germany, it was cut in Idar-Oberstein: one of the great gem cutting centers of Europe. At over 35 carats, this totally natural gem is a serious example of some of the best Tourmaline ever found. It comes with an AGL cert (#CS 65960) that attests to its lack of treatments and essential purity.
