Very Fine Gemstone: Emerald - 4.76 Ct.
Kafubu Emerald District, Ndola, Ndola District, Copperbelt Province, Zambia

The first Zambian Emeralds were found in 1928 but the deposit was not pursued because the geologists, at the time, were more interested in finding Copper deposits ... too bad for them. Little did they know that Emeralds would later grow to become Zambia's most economically important gemstone export. However, fine Zambian Emeralds, such as this one, are still few and far between. Cut in the classic "emerald" style displaying a rectangular outline with the 'clipped' corners characteristic of the emerald cut, this fine gemstone shows medium to deep color saturation and, although included, as is typical for Emerald, the overall clarity and sparkle of the stone is not diminished. At 4.76 carats it is a significant stone for the locality and not inconsequential in comparison to gems from other world sources. This Emerald was found in 2003, way before the current open pit mining operations at Kagem were started, and it was cut in the Thai gem center of Chanthaburi. It was sent to the AGL for analysis and their certification came back as natural Emerald from Zambia with minor to moderate enhancement for clarity.
