Very Fine Gemstone: Demantoid Garnet - 8.58 Ct.
Parrot Mine, Tubussis Farm 22, Karibib District, Erongo Region, Namibia

Demantoid, for those curious about the name, is a variety of Andradite Garnet that possesses an extremely high refractive index (R.I.) and dispersion; so high that it is very similar to Diamond, which was once called "Demant" in archaic German. The original locality was in the Ural Mountains of Russia, but since then, additional localities have been discovered, not many, but some. The area around Tubussis, in central Namibia, is one of the few localities that have produced more than a few scraps of isolated crystals. Unlike the Russian material, crystals from the Tubussis area ranges in color from root beer brown to the blue green tint shown by this round brilliant gem. Of those various shades, the blue-green one is considered to be the most valuable and blue-green stones above 5 carats are very unusual. This one, at 8.58 carats is a rare gem indeed. Being blue-green shows the dispersion color effects very well. It comes with an AGL Cert # CS 65937 that affirms its Namibian origin, as well as the completely natural, untreated character of this very fine gem.
