DescriptionRare Gemstone: Color Change Fluorite - 306 Ct.
Near Nova Era, Itabira, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Brazilian pegmatite deposits are very rarely the home of exceptional Fluorite specimens. The few that have emerged usually exhibit deep blue coloration and high transparency. It was just such a Fluorite that furnished the "rough" for this exotic gem. Very much like Alexandrite, this eye-clean 306 ct. oval gem shows a change in color depending on the lighting. Under "daylight," fluorescent illumination, it displays sapphire blue color with just a touch of violet. Under incandescent, or candlelight, the hue shifts radically to Siberian Amethyst color: purple with a hint of red. The chameleon gem was mined in the 1960s and resided, for decades, in the collection of well-known gem and mineral dealer Ed Swoboda.
Measurements: 48.8 x 34.5 x 25.8 mm, 306 ct.
Provenance: Ex. Ed Swoboda Collection
