    TOPAZ

Olho do Onça ("The Eye of the Jaguar"): Gem Topaz - 9,630 CT.
    Minas Gerais, Brazil

Sometime around 1900, a member of the Schupp Family acquired a giant Topaz crystal. The Schupps were operators of a mine in Joaima, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and owners of "Joalheria Schupp" - a jewelry concern in Rio de Janeiro. They were known for designing Brazilian gemstone jewelry, and marketing the finished creations throughout the world. That Topaz crystal was kept in the Schupp family collection until 1960. It was then sold to Viktor Schank, a renowned gem cutter from Idar-Oberstein: the gem cutting capital of Germany and Europe. Herr Schank took three months to turn the massive crystal into a 9,630 carat gem of pale gold-green color; hence the name Olho do Onça: The Eye of the Jaguar, in Portuguese. The name not only refers to the color of the stone, but to the "navette" or "marquise" style of cut, that pays homage again to the Jaguar, through its eye-like shape. After cutting, the giant gem stayed with Herr Schank for 40 years, passing on to his daughter upon his death. The present owner, having been friends with Herr Schank's son-in-law for many years, was offered the stone when that son-in-law died a couple of years ago. The navette/marquise shaped gem is well finished, and very "clean," with only a few, tiny inclusions near the girdle on one side. It comes with an old-style display stand, and a certificate of authenticity from the GfD: Gesellschaft füf Diamantgutachten, The Society for Diamond Appraisals/Pforzheim.

N.B. THIS GEMSTONE IS ONE OF THE LARGEST FACETED TOPAZ GEMS ON THE PLANET: 9,630 carats (1926 gms) or a hefty 4.25 pounds.
Attempting to wear it may result in injury.

    Overall Measurements: 8.7 x 4.0 x 2.4 inches (21.8 x 10.3 x 6.0 cm), 9,630 ct.
