Description

INTENSE GREEN FACETED FLUORITE
Wise Mine, Westmoreland, New Hampshire
The Wise Mine was opened in 1892 and produced fluorite used for flux in steel-making. Renowned for its intense green color, fluorite from the Wise Mine is readily identifiable. The color is attributed to the presence of yttrium, a rare-earth element. The mine ceased operations after World War I and has only been worked sporadically for mineral specimens and gem rough since then. Facetted as a sizable, water-clear oval gemstone, this Wise Mine fluorite weighs an impressive 89.78 carats.
