Description

Gemstone: Iolite - 15.12 Cts.
Unknown Locality

This impressive 15.12-carat Iolite represents an unusually large example of the violet-blue variety of Cordierite. Long admired for its striking pleochroism, Iolite displays shifting tones depending on viewing direction and was historically known as "Water Sapphire" for its resemblance to the famed blue gem. This stone exhibits a richly saturated bluish violet bodycolor with the moody depth characteristic of fine Iolite. While photographs emphasize its darker tones, the gem appears noticeably more vibrant in person, revealing lively flashes of color and light. Cut in an elegant, elongated cushion shape with modified brilliant faceting, the stone displays very good brilliance and strong color presence. Its pleochroic character contributes to subtle tonal variation across the surface, enhancing visual dimensionality. Very slightly included, the gem shows small disc-like inclusions beneath the table, typical for the species. Two minor nicks are present at pavilion facet junctions; otherwise, the stone remains in good overall condition. Large, well-saturated Iolite is uncommon, making this 15.12-carat specimen a noteworthy example of the variety, prized for its distinctive color, optical character, and impressive scale.
Measurements: 20.21 x 14.07 x 9.32 mm, 15.12 cts.
