    Description

    Gemstone: Benitoite - 2.23 Cts.
California State Gem Mine (Dallas Gem Mine; Benitoite Mine; Benitoite Gem Mine; Gem Mine)
Santa Rita Peak, New Idria Mining District
    San Benito Co., California, USA

Due to its rarity, Benitoite gemstones over half a carat are inherently rare, which makes this example at nearly 2.25 carats all the more impressive. This kite shaped Benitoite gemstone displays a strong dark bluish-violet hue and has been dubbed "Idol Eye." Once cut and faceted, Benitoite has a high refractive index and strong dispersion. This is clearly evident with this well-cut stone as it lights up and reflects light beautifully. Due to its unique crystal habit, hexagonal-dipyramidal, there are a few visible inclusions which are to be expected. This material only came out of one location, and that mine is now closed. This incredible and rare stone is in excellent condition, and at this carat weight and condition, needs no further explanation.
    Measurements: 11.16 x 6.75 x 5.12 mm, 2.23 cts.

    Provenance: The Jena Blue Collection
