Gemstone: Andradite Garnet - 11.91 Ct.
Tubussis Farm 22, Karibib District, Erongo Region, Namibia

Andradite Garnet is present in a number of small outcrops in the area of Tubussis Farm 22, in Namibia, where local tribal people pick up bits of the material from dry riverbeds and hillsides. Most are brown and translucent, but a small percentage will cut gems. The gemstone seen here is larger than most, and displays the desirable green hue that allows the high dispersion "fire" to become prominent. This is the same area and type of Garnet that is marketed as Demantoid; the only difference is that the amount of Chromium in the crystal lattice places this stone just this side of the line between Demantoid, as a variety of Andradite, and Andradite itself. The rough found in 1998 was cut by Tony Mittelmeyer of Cape Town, South Africa, as a modified cushion shape in a 'step-cut' style, and, as indicated by the AGL Cert # CS 65938, it is entirely natural with no evidence of heating or other enhancements. At 11.91 carats, it is considerably larger than normal mine-run gemstones from the area.
    Overall Measurements: 16.64 x 9.65 x 7.42 mm, 11.91 cts.

    Provenance: Rainbow of Africa Collection
Accompanied by AGL Certificate # CS 65938
