Description
Fine Gemstone: Rhodolite Garnet - 43.18 Ct.Tanzania
"Garnet" is the short-form code word for a group of Silicate minerals sharing certain characteristics. Like Sapphire and Tourmaline, there are any number of elements that can fit into the ideal, or theoretical structure, and which elements, and how much of them, determines the type and color of the 'real-world' embodiment of that ideal structure. A mix of Pyrope (an Iron and Magnesium Garnet) with Almandine (a Garnet with just Iron) produces the Rhodolite variety. Sort of like Cocker Spaniel and Poodle gets you a Cockapoo; Rhodolite is the Cockapoo equivalent. Rhodolite typically shows a purple hue as the dominant body color and Tanzanian ones can be large and eye clean as well. Tony Mittelmeyer of Cape Town, South Africa, faceted this mixed cut style gem from rough found in 1999. At 43+ carats it is larger than normal for any Garnet gems, including Rhodolite.
Measurements: 19.50 x 18.65 x 13.21 mm, 43.18 cts.
Offered at no reserve.
Provenance: Rainbow of Africa Collection
