Fine Gemstone: Rainbow Moonstone Parure - 87.0 TCW
    Malawi

There are gems that although rare, are seen on an infrequent, but still, repetitive basis. There are groupings of those same gems that may appear, but for various reasons, never appear in groups again. As a specific example you see before you a parure of Rainbow Moonstones from Malawi. It is made up of 58 separate gems, of which 56 are cut in a "teardrop" style and two are round brilliant stones. The parure breaks down into: one teardrop weighing 5.29 ct., for a pendant or brooch; two matching round brilliants with two matched teardrops, for earrings; and the remaining 53 teardrops are designed to be a necklace of matched and graduated teardrops. Mark Kaufman, the master lapidary who faceted this material, stated, in a trade article, that out of 100 kg of rough, only 2 kg was facet grade material, and, of that, the yield of finished gems was only 5 to 6 percent. Even as beautiful as these stones are, with a yield of 0.1%, it's no wonder that the miners have given up on the locality. "Beautiful" is definitely an understatement when it comes to these particular Moonstones. Few gem materials exhibit schiller: the floating "cloud of internal light" that is seen, at its best, in this set. These gems are able to return that soft glow from multiple angles, and do so in all colors of the rainbow. This multi-spectral effect is shown by only a very small number of Moonstones of the world and the Malawi ones can be distinguished from the rest by microscopic needle inclusions, and a "moderately strong chalky purplish pink fluorescence under LW-UV, and a weaker greenish yellow luminescence under SW-UV." Talk is cheap, but believe us, when we say, that you will not likely see a set like this ever assembled again.
Specifics: 58 gemstones, Total Carat Weight: 87.0 cts.
