Opals
Gemstones: Opal Parure - 103.33 TCWEthiopia
This incredible Opal Parure is a striking masterpiece, featuring 68 total dark Opals from Ethiopia. Each stone has been matched to achieve the perfect balance of shape, size, and play-of-color. The grouping is thoughtfully composed of 54 stones for the necklace and seven stones each for 'chandelier-style' earrings. The main anchor Opal for the necklace is a 26.29-carat pear-shaped Opal measuring 26.74 x 24.81 x 9.74 mm, which is surrounded by three smaller pear-shaped stones, followed by the rest of the necklace consisting of 50 oval-shaped Opals, each weighing approximately 1.05 carats and measuring approximately 8.15 x 6.20 x 4.25 mm. A pair of earrings is comprised of seven Opals each-three smaller pear-shaped cabochons, each weighing approximately 1.15 carats and measuring approximately 10.90 x 7.20 x 3.55 mm, and one central round-cut Opal, with three additional oval stones. The layout and the final design are up to the wearer, as the photo represents a slightly different layout.
The play-of-color evident is nothing short of mesmerizing, featuring a mix of broadflash, honeycomb, and chaff patterns. The pattern variation is spellbinding, and the amount of spectral colors on full display in 68 unique ways makes this set truly captivating. Each shape has a slightly different cut, as the largest cabochon features a medium dome, a flat base, and a rounded girdle, while the oval stones feature a high dome, flat-cut base, and rounded girdle. When combined, the result is electric.
These Ethiopian Opals have been heated, which is an acceptable treatment for Opals, creating a black background color with semitranslucent to opaque transparency. This allows the 'fire' to become more prominent, enhancing the beauty of this natural material. Due to this treatment, some minor "dead zones" are present-an expected characteristic of this variety. However, the overall quality remains exceptional, with each stone meticulously cut, polished, and expertly matched, creating a one-of-a-kind offering. The possibilities are endless with these loose stones, but the result can be one mesmerizing piece of custom jewelry.
