Description

Gemstone: Opal Sphere - 14.04 Cts.
Ethiopia

This striking Crystal Opal sphere originates from the renowned Opal deposits of Ethiopia, a locality celebrated for producing Opal with vivid and dynamic play-of-color. While most Opals are traditionally cut as cabochons to best display their internal fire, this example has been fashioned into a perfectly rounded orb, an uncommon and visually captivating presentation for this precious material. Weighing just over 14 carats, the sphere has been expertly polished to create a smooth, symmetrical form that reveals color across its entire surface. The gem displays an intense linear ribbon pattern of play-of-color, with vibrant flashes of all the spectral colors that move fluidly beneath the surface. Against its warm, semi-translucent background hue, these spectral hues shift and dance across the stone as it is turned, creating a dynamic display of light and color. The 360-degree polish allows the Opal's fire to be appreciated from every angle, transforming the gemstone into a miniature orb of color. The play-of-color remains strong and consistent throughout the surface, enhancing its visual impact. In pristine condition, this sphere represents an unusual and elegant way to showcase Ethiopian Crystal Opal. Whether incorporated into a piece of custom jewelry or displayed as a small sculptural object, this gem offers a distinctive and engaging presentation of one of nature's most mesmerizing natural materials.
Measurements: 14.13 mm in diameter, 14.04 cts.

Estimate: $1,500 - up.
