    LITERATURE:
    Published in Form and Reform.

Frankl was widely recognized for his attempts to establish an American iconography in furniture design, most notably with his Skyscraper furniture. Christopher Long writes in Paul Frankl and Modern American Design, "The immediate appeal of Frankl's Skyscraper furniture line rested, of course, in its associations with the city's tallest buildings."

    More Information:

Paul Frankl was one of a number of European artists and designers who had emigrated to the USA in the early decades of the 20th century, transmitting a progressive, yet decorative, aesthetic.. He opened a shop in the early 1920s, selling his own furniture designs as well as imported wallpapers and textiles.

Speaking of his new line of Skyscraper furniture in 1927, Frankl claims, "(the new furniture) evolved as an ideal of speed, based on the fact that a straight line is the shortest distance between two points..Surely we can create a furniture expressive of the modern scheme of life just as we have evolved a modern music."   He believed that Americans had a proprietary claim to modernism: "it was an American who created the entire current of modern architecture and decorative art: Frank Lloyd Wright. Secondly-we as a younger nation possess the right because we have the spirit to adapt ourselves  more readily to the New.  We've proven it repeatedly."
