Leading the international contemporary design field for many years was the adventurous and experimental work coming from the Netherlands, especially from designers educated at the Design Academy Eindhoven, known for its open approach to the discipline. Many of these designers established studio based practices, creating works produced either as unique objects or in small editions. Droog, based in Amsterdam, was one of a few manufacturers who found ways of harnessing the creative energy of this generation to produce works that could be brought to a broader marketplace. Marijn van der Poll's Do Hit Chair is one of the most recognizable works from this period, a chair in concept, where the designer has invited the owner of the chair into the process of creation by providing the tool (sledgehammer), and the opportunity to sculpt themselves. Similar to the work of Tokujin Yoshioka's iconic Honey Pop chair (where the owner sits in the paper chair to make the shape), or referencing the common leather club chairs that eventually form shape to their sitters, this concept takes new meaning in van der Poll's design. The Do Hit Chair is held in the collections of several public collections, including the Dallas Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
