    Description

A French 19th Century Gilt Bronze and Marquetry Commode à Vantaux

Based on a model by Bernard II van Risenburgh (circa 1696-1766), Paris, France
    Mid 19th century
Mahogany, tulipwood, and fruitwood veneers on oak carcase, gilt bronze, marble
    Marks: A. LECLAIRE
    38 inches high x 67 inches wide x 26 inches deep

The two door commode à vantaux of bombé form, the front and sides with panels of scrolling floral marquetry framed by foliate c-scroll gilt bronze mounts on reserved ground, cabriole legs with gilt bronze foliate scroll chutes and sabots, with Greek key collar; Breche d'Alep marble top.

Bernard II van Risenburgh (BVRB), of Netherlandish origin, specialized in furniture decorated with panels of Japanese lacquer and veneered with floral marquetry in kingwood and tulipwood, as seen on this piece. Working almost exclusively with the important marchands-merciers Lazare Duvaux and Thomas-Joachim Hebert, BVRB himself remained somewhat of an enigma, having minimal contact with his aristocratic and royal clientele.

This commode à vantaux bears the stamped mark of A. Leclaire who might be identified with Jean-Eugene Leclaire, a marchand-ébéniste established at 33 rue Saint Nicholas in Paris from 1856.

    Provenance:

From the personal collection of Loyd Taylor and Paxton Gremillion, Dallas, Texas

    Estimate: $125,000 - up.
