Sotheby's, Chicago, Illinois, 20th Century Decorative Works of Art, November 7, 1999, lot 211;
Acquired from the above by current owner.

One of a pair, this maple and birch wood twin bed resided in the north bedroom of Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio in Oak Park, Illinois, between 1911 and 1925. Originally fitted with a shelf along the top of the headboard (as evidenced by a series of small nail holes), the bed exhibits the characteristic simplicity and solidity of form seen in Wright's early furniture. The interiors of the Oak Park home and studio were thoughtfully composed, with furnishings integral to the architectural design.

For Wright, architecture was not merely a profession but a means of elevating the human experience. He believed every element within a space should serve as part of a unified whole, a principle demonstrated throughout the house and documented in period photographs. Though furniture comprised only a small portion of his output, it remains among his most influential work. The bed's rectilinear structure and unadorned surfaces echo the geometric clarity of his exterior designs, exemplifying his commitment to environments in which form and function are seamlessly aligned.

The bed's mate is held in the Collection of the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust, underscoring the significance of this surviving example.
