Frank Lloyd Wright's Price Tower remains the renowned architect's only realized "skyscraper", and a lasting testament to his ability to integrate complex elements into a cohesive whole. He designed furniture for use throughout the Tower's rooms. Price Tower's 'Casual Chair' otherwise known as the Sloped Armchair, was created for various spaces in the building, including H.C. Price's executive office. Some forty were originally specified and made by Blue Stem Foundry under owner Cecil Magana's experimental methods.
They were notoriously difficult to construct. In 1956, casting aluminum was a challenging undertaking, and each chair was essentially sand cast and subsequently hand constructed. The present example features the original silvered painted aluminum frame and comes from the collection of Magana who retailed a few examples of the chairs and whose family recently exhibited them at Price Tower Arts Center.
