    Description

Fernando Campana (Brazilian, b. 1961) and Humberto Campana (Brazilian, b. 1953)
    TransPlastic Chair, 2006
    Plastic, woven natural fibers
    35 x 34 x 25-1/2 inches (88.9 x 86.4 x 64.8 cm)

Renowned contemporary designers Fernando and Humberto Campana introduced their TransPlastic collection in 2007 with an exhibition at Albion Gallery, London. Comprised of seating in various configurations, including single-seat chairs like the present lot, as well as larger biomorphic benches with multiple seats of incongruous form and shapes, the plastic seats are held within extensions of a natural Brazilian fiber called Apui, altering the original, more familiar forms. As explained in their press release at the time, Brazilian terraces and outdoor cafes were furnished with wicker pieces, which over time were substituted by plastic pieces. In creating these hybrid semi-organic designs, the Campana Brothers simultaneously play with, and comment on this development.
