A George III Giltwood ArmchairAttributed to Thomas Chippendale, London, England
Circa 1770
Giltwood, leather
Marks: none
36.5 inches high x 25.75 inches wide x 19.5 inches deep
The giltwood open armchair with coved cartouche shaped padded back framed in guilloche moulding with acanthus clasps at top and bottom, the padded arms on carved and moulded supports, the shaped seat with fluted ogee front rail, cabriole legs headed by anthemions and husk-swag brackets with scroll toes on low plinths.
This chair corresponds to a set of six chairs illustrated by Christopher Gilbert in The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale (1978, vol II, plate 181). Though undocumented as works by Chippendale, Gilbert found them to "conform to Chippendale's standard documented patterns."
The closest documented parallel to Chippendale's oeuvre is the set of four armchairs supplied around 1770 to Edwin Lascelles, later Lord Harwood, for the Couch Room at Harewood House, Yorkshire.
Provenance:
Collection of Henry Ford II, sold Christie, Manson & Woods, New York (1981)
From the personal collection of Loyd Taylor and Paxton Gremillion, Dallas, Texas
