In 1906, Van de Velde was commissioned by the banker Karl Ernst Osthaus to design and build the Hohenhof residence in Hagen. Together with Henri Matisse, Johan Thorn-Prikker, and Ferdinand Hodler, Van de Velde decorated the interior creating this bench for the foyer of the villa.
