    AN ITALIAN MICROMOSAIC TABLETOP SET WITHIN GILT WOOD BASE

    30 x 37-1/4 inches diameter (76.2 x 94.6 cm)

    A circular micromosaic tabletop with central image of St. Peter's Square framed by Greek key border and scenes of twelve Roman monuments comprising from twelve o'clock the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, Tomb of Cecilia Metella, Arch of Janus Quadrifrons, Temple of Vesta, Forum of Augustus, Colosseum, Temple of Vespasian in the Roman Forum, Pantheon with twin bell towers, Arch of Titus, Temple of Sibyl at Tivoli, Temple of Nerva and Capitoline Hill, table top set within a gilt wood frame with anthemion borders, carved foliate tripod base upon conforming plinth with putti astride fantastic long necked beasts with lions head and feet, each beast clenching snake in mouth that winds its body.

    A table with a nearly identical micromosaic tabletop is in The Gilbert Collection, London, England. The table is illustrated as entry 69 in Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel's Micromosaics, published by Philip Wilson in Association with the Gilbert Collection, 2000.
