DescriptionAn Egyptian Revival Mahogany and Marquetry Library Table, circa 1870
30-3/4 h x 55 w x 30-3/4 d inches (78.1 x 139.7 x 78.1 cm)
The table being primarily constructed of mahogany, top with raised geometric inlaid border of triangles, ankhs and cobras, interior decorated with lotus and reeded frame depicting the Judgment in the Presence of Osiris scene borrowed from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, scene inlaid with bone, rosewood, mahogany, maple and mother-of-pearl, banded inlay to top board sides, below to bronze figural mounts of stylized dogs' heads to front and back, figural column standards with carved and painted foliage decoration to bases and capitals, ornate stretcher with carved sphinx raised on pedestal flanked by carved lotus blossoms, terminating on scrolled feet with geometric and fan inlay throughout.
Note: The inlay depicts the "Judgment in the Presence of Osiris" scene borrowed from the 19th Dynasty's (c. 1300 BCE) Papyrus of Hunefor, a copy of the funerary Egyptian Book of the Dead. The dead man (Hunefor) is first led by the jackal-headed deity Anubis into the judgment hall at the left of the inlay. Anubis weighs his heart against a feather, to measure whether Hunefor has a pure heart worthy of the afterlife. The female demon Ammut watches while the ibis-headed Thoth serves as scribe. Hunefor's heart weighs less than the feather and falcon-headed Horus then leads the triumphant deceased to Osiris, seated in his shrine with Isis and Nephthys.
Age cracking to top, some losses to inlay, some cracking to wood near bronze mounts, wood restoration to underside near one bronze mount, scratching and nicking to feet and stretcher, light chipping to gesso to sphinx, some wood restoration to top border, screws to dogs' heads mounts replaced, some wood mounts loose, some lifting to veneer, presenting very well.
