Acquired from above, 2000. The secretary inlaid with various woods including walnut, fruitwood, amaranth, and various burrs surmounted by reticulated gallery with four plinths to cardinal corners, marquetry inlay to plinths of plain rectangles and butterflies, sand shaded highlights throughout marquetry pieces, frieze drawer with repeating marquetry daisies with abalone escutcheon, below to decorative banding, hinged door with elaborate framed scene of ruins of a neoclassical house, case sides flanked by plain columns with helix banding, interior opens to three open compartments and nine closed compartments, stained, inlaid, and sand shaded decorations to book drawers and center door, red leather writing surface with gilt border, door fitted with weighted mechanism to allow opening and closure, lower doors with neoclassical architectural marquetry scenes, lower interior with two compartments and removable locking strongbox drawer, lower apron with string inlay terminating on tapered feet with brass toupie mounts to front.
Note: This lot's design and impressive marquetry work was inspired by the designs of Cristoforo and Lorenzo Canozi da Lendinara and is executed in the style of Guiseppe Maggiolini, suggesting marquetry panel manufacture around the Rolo workshops, Emilia-Romana, Italy.
Adhesive residue to top escutcheon, minor restoration to some veneer chips, veneer chip to band above drawer, scattered veneer chipping below lower doors and interior drawers, interior drawers displaying slight bowing to drawer fronts, chip to plinth decoration to top, age appropriate cracking to veneer throughout, interior door with minor veneer separation, leather writing surface is a probable replacement, older refinish, some kick marks and veneer loss to legs, otherwise good condition. Lot retains original key and is a strong example.
