In 1864, Gustave formed a partnership with his brother Christian, changing the business to Herter Brothers. Their partnership led to prominent commissions including the homes of wealthy industrialists William H. Vanderbilt, J. Pierpont Morgan and Potter Palmer, among others.
This particular cabinet was purchased by Philip Danforth Armour, founder of the Armour Meat Packing Company in Chicago, Illinois. At the end of the nineteenth-century the cabinet was moved to the Armour's summer estate Danforth Lodge on Oconomowac Lake in Wisconsin.
