One of the most endearing aspects of the artist
Sam Maloof was the effect his character had on the
families who lived with his hand-made creations. To
know Sam Maloof, and to work with his studio, was
to be embraced by loving and generous friends.
Sam exhibited a generosity of spirit that he displayed both inside the studio
and out. One of the hallmarks of commissioning a piece of Sam's work was
that you were treated like family during the process, and you became 'a
friend for life.' Over and over, the families who have lived with works by
Maloof have noted that they treasured their friendship with the artist, and the
stories of working with Sam, just as much as they loved living with the actual
physical works.
Ted Seidman was an enthusiastic weekend wood-worker who shared the
same love of wood as his friend Sam Maloof. It is evident from the family
stories, that Sam and Ted truly enjoyed each other's company. The quality of
the works produced for the Seidman family and even the adventurous spirit
of this commission, underscore an especially close connection between artist
and client. Maloof clearly thought highly of Ted Seidman, his lovely wife
Ellen and their family as he created a magnificent free-edged and notched
table for their home like no other. The monumental sculptural dining table
and eight-chair set on offer at Heritage is simply a Sam Maloof masterwork.
Heritage is proud to offer the Ted and Ellen Seidman Sam Maloof commission
for sale at auction.
