    The apron reverse bears a paper loan label from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston: M.F.A. 426 Lent by Hermann F. Clarke. This chair is virtually identical to a set of four chairs that descended from John Gaines III through the Brewster family. This chair was part of a pair sold by Israel Sack, Inc. and was illustrated in several publications while residing in the collection of noted early American furniture collectors Mr. and Mrs. Mitchel Taradash including:
    The Decorative Arts of New Hampshire: 1725-1825, Currier Gallery of Art, 1964;
    Living with Antiques, E.P. Dutton & Co, 1963, p. 93;
    The Magazine Antiques, January 1953, p. 46.

    Accompanying this lot is a copy of the original bill of sale from Israel Sack and associated research.


    The chair constructed of maple with rush seat having yoke-shaped crests with scrolled terminals with pierced and carved leaf center flanked by scrolls, beaded-edge posts continuing to squared rear legs, molded lower bar supporting vasiform backsplat, rectangular maple seat frame with mortise and tenon joinery and woven rush seat, chair apron with arched rails, front apron rail with incised border and central arch, ring-and-ball turned stretcher to front, bulbous turned stretcher to rear, rectangular lower stretchers to sides, block-and-vase turned front legs terminating on carved and scrolled Spanish feet.





    Condition Report*: The chair exhibits hand-planed and hand-tooled surfaces with an attractive patina throughout. The seat frame appears to be original. Chair exhibits slight age-crack to side of right foot, metal coasters adhered to underside of feet, minor scuffing at feet, age crack to back right foot, minor scattered age-related cracking near joinery, wear to finish to backsplat, cut to rush seat at frame, seat braces to interior may be replacements.
